About

Born in a small village in Kelantan, married with 4 daughters. Get his early education in Kelantan. Received his Master and PhD degree in Demography from University Malaya. Dr. Tiun was attached to UM before he left to University Brunei Darulsalam in 1988. In 1991 he was back to Penang and was appointed as a Lecturer in Planning and Management Section, School of Social Sciences, University Sains Malaysia. He was appointed as the section chair in 2001 and was promoted to Assoc. Prof. in 2003.

Besides lecturing and conducting research, he is active in several social activities and Non Governmental Organisation. He was awarded excellence community service award by USM (2002), National Disabled worker Award from the Ministry of Human Resources (2002), Penang Disabled Person Award (2003) and also an excellence services award by USM in 2003. In 2005 he was awarded as a Tokoh Orang Kurang Upaya Kebangsaan. He is the Ex-President of Society of the Orthopaedically Handicapped Malaysia (POCAM), Chairman of USM Disabled Support Group, ex- Resident Association Chairman of his residential complex and also the Penang High-rise Unit Owner Association President. He was appointed as the member Penang Strata Title Board members by the State government from 2005 - 2007. He is also the current President of the Malaysian Council of Sport and Recreation For the Disabled (MASRON), President of the Federation of Physically Disabled Sport Malaysia and chairman of Association Penang Sport and Recreation for the disabled (PESRON) and in 2009 he was appointed as a Chef de mission leading a team of national athletes to the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sport (IWAS game) in Bangalore, India. He had given talks and present several papers in international and local seminars advocating the rights of the PwDs. He also had written several academic books; among them are Basic Guide on Research Methodology, Demography and working women and also The Management of High-rise Residential Complexes in Penang – description and reality
